What to see and do in Fogars de Montclús

Fogars de Montclús
Village
Fogars de Montclús is a municipality in the Vallès Oriental, in the province of Barcelona, which extends over the southern slope of the Montseny massif and includes a large part of it, with the natural park's headquarters within its territory. It has 494 inhabitants (INE 2025) and an area of 39.2 km², with a steep gradient running from 200 m near the Pertegàs stream to the 1,712 m of Turó de l'Home, the highest peak of the Montseny, which explains the diversity of its vegetation. Despite its small population centre, it has notable tourist activity and preserves a heritage of small Romanesque churches, among them Sant Cristòfol de Fogars and Sant Esteve de la Costa, from the 12th century, as well as the hermitage of Santa Fe del Montseny, documented since 1231.
Montseny Natural Park
Nature
Montseny Natural Park protects part of the massif of the same name and has been a Unesco biosphere reserve since 1978. It was established in 1928, although it did not receive its regulations until 1977, the year it came under the management of the Barcelona Provincial Council, joined by that of Girona in 1978; it was formally declared a natural park in 1987. It extends across the territories of some twenty municipalities, including Fogars de Montclús, and its summit is the Turó de l'Home, at 1706.7 metres in altitude.
l'Home Peak
Nature
The Turó de l'Home is the highest peak of the Montseny massif, in the municipality of Fogars de Montclús (Vallès Oriental, Barcelona), at 1,706 metres in altitude, ahead of nearby peaks such as les Agudes and Matagalls. It is formed of phyllite and cornubianite and acts as the watershed line between the riera de Santa Fe and the river Tordera. An old meteorological observatory stands on its summit: the initiative, launched in 1881 by Artur Osona, stalled and was later taken up by Eduard Fontserè, until the wooden building, the work of architect Damià Ribas, was inaugurated in 1932. Manual observations ceased in 2003.
Santa Fe del Montseny Valley
Nature
The hermitage of Santa Fe is the historic centre of the valley to which it gives its name, documented since 1231. Around 1270 a group of hermits known as the orde d'ermitans de Santa Fe lived there, which did not survive for long; from the fourteenth century the chapel was left in the care of a single hermit, dependent on the rector of Fogars de Montclús. The original chapel was enlarged in 1577 and renovated at the start of the eighteenth century, in 1701. It is a religious building with a single nave, with a single-arched bell-gable, slightly off-centre relative to the door, beneath which remains of a sundial are preserved, an element common in the churches of the Montseny.
Montseny Biosphere Reserve
Historical milestone
UNESCO declared the massif a Biosphere Reserve in 1978, nine years before the natural park designation was approved, in 1987. It protects 30,120 hectares and species such as the Montseny newt, the only endemic vertebrate of Catalonia.
