What to see and do in Riells i Viabrea

Riells i Viabrea
Village
Riells i Viabrea is a municipality of the Selva comarca, in the province of Girona, at the foot of the Montseny, formed in 1787 by the union of the former territories of Riells and Viabrea, which until then belonged to the Batllia de n'Orri of the viscounty of Cabrera. It has 4,635 inhabitants (INE 2025). Part of its municipal area lies within the Montseny Natural Park, crossed by the Riells stream, a tributary of the Tordera, in a landscape of holm oak and beech woods at altitude. Its economy, traditionally agricultural and pastoral, has been transformed by the spread of second-home developments. It preserves the Romanesque-origin church of Sant Martí, in the district of Riells, and that of Sant Llop, also Romanesque, in Viabrea.
Tower of en Pega
Monument
The torre d'en Pega, also called the castell de Riells, is a medieval fortified house whose ruins lie on the boundary of the municipality of Riells, next to the fields of the mas can Pega, in a holm-oak wood; it was raised as a minor stronghold three kilometres from the castle of Montsoriu to defend the valley of Breda and Riells, as part of its defensive system, together with other towers such as that of les Bruixes. The alod of Busquets, today the Torre d'en Pega, is already mentioned in 1038, in the donation of lands to found the monastery of Sant Salvador de Breda; in 1358 its lord appears as sub-castellan of Montsoriu, mentioned again in 1395, and in 1419 it belonged to the viscounts of Cabrera. Square in plan, about 20 metres on each side, today only the north-facing and east-facing walls remain, about 6 metres high and pierced by several arrow slits; it may date from the 12th century or, more probably, the 13th.
