What to see and do in Montseny

Montseny
Village
Montseny is a small mountain village that gives its name to the massif and natural park of the same name, in the Vallès Oriental, with 388 inhabitants. Its terrain is rugged, from the peaks of Matagalls and Les Agudes, around 1,700 metres, down to the main settlement, next to the parish church at 530 metres, near where the Tordera river rises at the Font Bona. It preserves several Romanesque churches, the hermitage of Sant Marçal, that of Sant Martí and that of Sant Julià, with a monumental holly tree in its courtyard. On display there is the Estela de la Calma, a megalithic stone with carvings that some authors place at the end of the Neolithic. The Museo de les Esquelles de Jaume brings together close to a thousand cowbells collected by the shepherd Jaume Traveria.
Plain of la Calma
Nature
The Pla de la Calma is a plateau in the westernmost part of the Montseny massif, extending across portions of the municipalities of Tagamanent, el Brull, Sant Pere de Vilamajor, Montseny and Cànoves i Samalús, between the peaks of Matagalls and the Turó de l'Home, to which it connects via the Sant Marçal and Collformic passes, enclosing the upper basin of the river Tordera. Formed of sedimentary rock, with reddish sandstone visible in nearby buildings such as the church of el Brull, its present-day landscape of broad meadows and moorland — although it would naturally correspond to forest — is the result of traditional livestock farming and agriculture. Its highest peak is the puig Drau, at 1344 metres, crossed by the GR 5 long-distance trail, known as the sender dels Miradors.
Montseny chestnuts
Food and drink
The chestnut groves of the massif give one of the most characteristic forest products of the comarca, alongside mushrooms and aromatic plants. They are gathered in autumn, they sustain castanyades and village fairs and they feed a small local processing industry.
