Castle of Sentmenat Monument · Sentmenat, Vallès Occidental, Barcelona The termenat castle of Sentmenat, documented since 1065, gives its name to the municipality of the Vallès Occidental and is declared a cultural asset of national interest. It belonged first to the Montcada lineage and, from the mid-12th century, to the Sentmenat family, its vassals, who in 1380 obtained full lordship of the castle and in 1691 the title of Marquis of Sentmenat. It is a large Gothic building rebuilt on earlier foundations, reached by a stone bridge; its walls, three metres thick, form two rectangular wings joined by a third in a quarter-circle arc around a trapezoidal courtyard. On the main facade the marquisate's coat of arms can be seen carved above the doorway. Between the 17th and 18th centuries the castle was used as a farmhouse, losing its defensive function.
