What to see and do in Barberà del Vallès

Barberà del Vallès
Village
Barberà del Vallès is a municipality in the comarca of Vallès Occidental, in the province of Barcelona, part of the city's metropolitan area. It lies on the Vallès plain, on a river terrace formed by the river Ripoll that favours morning fog; its highest point is the Puig dels Tudons, at 168 metres, in the Serra de la Salud. The municipality's name comes from an old property called Barberane, documented in the late 10th century, and until 1916 it was called Barberá, later becoming Santa María de Barberá in honour of its patron saint, before recovering its current form in 1983. Its economy today is based on logistics, chemical, pharmaceutical and machinery industries. It preserves the castell termenat of Barberà and the church of Santa María.
Castle of Barberà
Monument
The castle of Barberà, which gives its name to Barberà del Vallès (Vallès Occidental, Barcelona), has medieval origins and is already mentioned at the end of the 10th century; in 1005 Viscount Guitard bequeathed half of it to the cathedral of Barcelona and the other half to the basilica of Sant Miquel. It passed through the Montcada, Ribes and Pinós-Santcliment families, the latter granted the title of Marquis of Barberà by Philip V in 1702. After the War of the Spanish Succession the king ordered its fortifications dismantled, and during the 19th and 20th centuries it functioned as a farmhouse. The town council acquired it in 1988 and consolidated it between 1989 and 1992; it preserves the keep and sections of crenellated wall with arrow slits.
Church of Santa Maria de Barberà
Monument
The church of Santa Maria de Barberà, in the Sagrera neighborhood of Barberà del Vallès (Vallès Occidental), on the right bank of the Ripoll river, was built in the second half of the 11th century and consecrated during the pontificate of Saint Olegarius (1116-1137). It is Romanesque in style, with a Latin-cross floor plan, a single nave and a slightly pointed barrel vault. It preserves one of the finest examples of Catalan Romanesque mural painting, from the 12th century, attributed to the Master of Cardona, with a central Pantocrator and cycles of saints. Listed as Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection; code BCIN 906-MH-EN, BIC RI-51-0010160), it was restored after the Civil War and has required a consolidation project under the Generalitat de Catalunya's Romànic Obert program and the Obra Social La Caixa.

Among its traditions stands out the role of the Colla de Geganters i Grallers de Barberà del Vallès, created in 1984 with the arrival of the village's first giants, Sebastià and Clotilde, christened at that same Festa Major; in 2008 the Marquis giants joined them, representing the first marquises of Barberà, Josep Galceran de Pinós and Agustina d'Urries, who were likewise christened during the festival. In the year 2000, Barberà was designated the fifteenth Ciutat Gegantera of Catalonia, with a gathering of giants held on the Sunday of that year's Festa Major.
