Colònia Borgonyà Historical milestone · Sant Vicenç de Torelló, Osona, Barcelona The Colònia Borgonyà, in Sant Vicenç de Torelló, is one of the largest and most emblematic textile colonies on the Ter, known as the “colònia dels Anglesos” despite the Scottish origin of its founders, the Coats family, later joined by the Catalan Fabra family. Nuevas Hilaturas del Ter was formed on 4 September 1893 as a subsidiary of the Scottish firms J&P Coats and Clark & Co, and built its factory next to the second water drop on the Ter; by the end of 1896 it was running at full capacity with 403 workers, 18 of them British. The place name comes from an old farmhouse and a Marian shrine from the late 13th century. With hierarchically arranged housing, a school and a church dating from 1898, it took on a markedly British town-planning character. It produced until 1999 and has been a cultural asset of national interest since 2013. 1893-1999 Photo: Kippelboy (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Sant Vicenç de Torelló
