Sant Martí de Centelles
Village
Sant Martí de Centelles is a municipality of 1,263 inhabitants in the province of Barcelona, in the Osona comarca, which extends along the right bank of the Congost river, beneath the cliffs of Bertí, and borders the Moianès and the Vallès Oriental. It has two inhabited settlements: the neighborhood of La Abella, beside the C-17 highway and seat of the municipal capital, with a station on the R3 Rodalies line, and the settlement of Sant Martí de Centelles, in the upper part, beside the old castle of Centelles. It gives its name to the castles of Sant Martí de Centelles, on the Turó del Castell, 876.6 meters high, and the Castellar de Dalt. Its highest point is the Puig Oriol, at 980 meters, in the west of the municipal territory.
Castle of Centelles (Sant Martí de Centelles)
Monument
Twelfth- to sixteenth-century castle in the municipality of Sant Martí de Centelles, Osona, already documented in 898 under the invocation of Sant Esteve. It belonged first to the counts of Osona and later passed to the Centelles family, lords documented from the early thirteenth century. It suffered serious damage during the fifteenth-century Catalan civil war: in 1464 a bombard destroyed part of the stronghold, which surrendered after a siege in 1465 and was later reinforced. French troops under General Saint-Cyr partially destroyed it in 1809, and the Carlists damaged it again in the nineteenth century, leading to its abandonment. Of irregular triangular plan, it preserves in the lower precinct, of Gothic date, crenellated walls with gun loops and a twelfth-century chapel with a barrel vault.
El Castellar
Monument
El Castellar, or Castellar de Dalt, is a farmhouse and former fortified house, originating in the thirteenth century, in Sant Martí de Centelles (Osona, Barcelona), declared a cultural asset of national interest. It stands on an estate that also includes the Castellar de Baix, les Pujades and el Fabregà farmhouses, on the upper buttresses of the cingles de Bertí. It is a rectangular-plan agricultural and livestock building, with several bodies added around a small paved threshing floor; the main south facade has a doorway with an engraved monolithic lintel. In the interior hallway a press is preserved, along with another engraved lintel bearing the name of the Castellar family and the drawing of a castle that gives the house its name, next to the stables, the wine cellar and a room for the farmhands with a stone kitchen and hearth.
