What to see and do in el Brull

El Brull
Village
El Brull is a municipality in the Osona comarca located at the foot of the Montseny, right at the entrance to its natural park, at an altitude of about 800 metres. It has a population of 296 inhabitants (INE 2025), largely devoted to growing vegetables and cereals, and from its territory the Pyrenees, Montserrat and La Mola can be seen on the horizon. It preserves the 11th-century Romanesque church of Sant Martí del Brull, and three sites listed in 1988 as Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection): the Romanesque castle of Brull, the castle of Sala and the Iberian walls of Montgròs. Prehistoric remains are also found in the territory, among them a monolith with an altar beside it, as well as the old sanatorium of Brull, housed in the mas Can Casademunt.
Castle of el Brull
Monument
The castle of El Brull, of Romanesque origin and enlarged in the 19th century, stands in the district of this municipality of Osona; it originally formed part of Seva, of which it later became the jurisdictional centre, and was a domain of the counts of Barcelona and a possession of the viscounts of Osona-Cardona. In 1265 Viscount Ramón de Cardona sold the barony of El Brull to the bishop of Vic. Of the medieval castle, pentagonal in plan and reinforced with circular towers at the corners and another at the centre of the north wall, only the north-eastern corner survives today, with a primitive one-metre-wide tower covered by a later one, and a fragment of the north wall with a badly damaged window; the two visible construction phases date between the 12th and 13th centuries.
La Sala of el Brull
Monument
A fortified house converted into a farmhouse, documented as a stronghold since the 12th century, with family records preserved from 1270, in the district of El Brull. The present building, rectangular in plan with its main façade facing east, is the result of an extension southward from the original nucleus; it retains 13th-century arrow-slit windows, visible in the north and east walls, and is entered through a stone doorway dated 1869. Laid out like a peasant farmhouse, with the ground floor used for storage and the upper floors for living quarters, it is notable for the arcaded galleries on the upper floor, recently restored. It is preserved in excellent condition and still operates today as a working farm.
Walls of Montgròs
Monument
Walls of Iberian date in the district of El Brull, at the foot of the Montseny, built by the Ausetani to close off the Montgròs pass and declared bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). The defended enclosure covers about nine hectares; the wall, some 145 metres long, 5 metres wide and up to 3-4 metres high where preserved, was raised without foundations directly on the rock or on a layer of clay containing remains of an earlier Late Bronze Age settlement. Two trapezoidal towers were built at its ends, and the entrance, to the south, was defended by a small bastion. Discovered in 1974 and still under excavation, the walls are dated between the 4th and 3rd centuries BC, with Roman-period alterations, and have proved key to the study of the Iberian world and the Ausetani.
Iberian Walls of Montgròs

The walls of Montgròs, or walls of el Brull, are defensive structures built by the Ausetani Iberians that close off the Montgròs pass, in the municipality of el Brull (Osona), at the foot of the Montseny, declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (the highest level of heritage protection, at national level). The site consists of a wall about 145 metres long and 5 metres wide, with a maximum surviving height of 3 to 4 metres, defending an area of about 9 hectares; at its ends stand two trapezoidal towers measuring 11 by 6 metres, and the access is on the south side, protected by a small bastion. Built between the 4th and 3rd centuries BC with alterations in Roman times, over an earlier Final Bronze Age settlement, they were discovered in 1974 and remain under excavation and restoration.
