What to see and do in Castellcir

Castellcir
Village
Castellcir is a municipality in the south-east of the Moianès, in the province of Barcelona, with 804 inhabitants (INE 2025), which until 2015 belonged to the Vallès Oriental comarca. It was formed from the former parishes of Sant Andreu de Castellcir, Santa Coloma Sasserra and la Vall de Marfà, and until the last third of the 20th century was a rural municipality of scattered settlement, with no centre beyond a few houses in a row where the Town Hall now stands. It preserves three castles: that of la Popa, from the 10th century, perched on a rock and the origin of the municipal coat of arms, that of Marfà, and the Torrota dels Moros. The riera de Tenes flows through its territory, rising within the municipality itself.
Castle of la Popa
Monument
The castle of la Popa, a boundary castle of Castellcir documented since 1014, stands on a rock without foundations, at the highest point of the village. Of the original enclosure, today in an advanced state of decay and threatened with ruin, stretches of wall survive, along with the remains of the main building and the chapel of Sant Martí de la Roca, an ensemble covering about 570 m² divided into a fortress of ground floor and two storeys. It was linked to the Castellcir dynasty, who held it in fief paying tribute to the monastery of l'Estany; after the family nearly disappeared with the Black Death of 1348, the castle passed to the Centelles, then to the Planella, and, as early as 1942, to Federico Torelló i Cendra. It is included on the Red List of Heritage at Risk of Hispania Nostra.
Little Tower of the Moors
Monument
Romanesque tower, also called la Torrassa, located on the right bank of the Castellcir stream (Moianès), about 600 metres north of Ca l'Antoja and a kilometre from the castle of Castellcir. It is a collapsed circular tower of which only about a quarter of the circle survives; the original diameter was around 8 or 9 metres, with walls about 2 metres thick that narrowed towards the top, and it must have reached about 14 metres in height, of which only 4.5 remain today. At its foot are the remains of a wall that may have closed an enclosure measuring 22 by 17 metres. According to the Generalitat's Heritage records, it would have been a link tower between the castle of Tenes and the castle of Castellcir, although other conjectures identify it with the castle of Tenes itself.
Castle of Marfà
Monument
The castle of Marfà, declared a cultural asset of national interest, is located in the municipality of Castellcir, in the Moianès. The surviving building is actually a farmhouse of rural structure, with a gabled roof and a stone façade facing south; the ground floor has an arcade of round arches, and at the rear two symmetrical wings with added ogee-arched windows. The farmhouse continues the settlement tradition of the small castle of Marfà, already mentioned in the year 939 as castrum Marphani. The territory, formerly independent, was incorporated into the municipality of Castellcir between 1845 and 1848, although its inhabitants preferred to be linked to Moià.
Dolmens of Castellcir
Curiosity
