What to see and do in Aiguafreda

Aiguafreda
Village
Aiguafreda is a municipality at the southern tip of Osona, near the Montseny massif, wedged into the valley of the river Congost, with 2,569 inhabitants. The place name, documented in Latin as Aqua Frigida in the year 898, on the occasion of the consecration of the church of Sant Martí del Congost — today Aiguafreda de Dalt, founded by the abbess Emma, daughter of Count Wilfred the Hairy —, recalls the landscape of the territory, dotted with masies such as Can Brull or Cruïlles. It preserves the castle of Cruïlles and a large dolmen at Can Brull, as well as other dolmens on the serra de l'Arca; in the church of Aiguafreda de Dalt Romanesque archaeological remains were found in 1972. It belonged to the Vallès Oriental until joining Osona in 2025 following a 2022 referendum.
Castle of Cruïlles (Aiguafreda)
Monument
The castle of Cruïlles, also called casal dels Cruïlles, is a building declared bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection), located in the district of Aiguafreda, in Osona. Important ruins survive of a large casal from the 14th and 15th centuries, partly inhabited as a farmhouse until recent times. It was first a fortified house and later a castell termenat; the place is documented from 1105, when it was already the residence of the lords of the quadra of Aiguafreda and the jurisdictional seat of the district, turned into a barony in 1577. In the early 16th century the building was destroyed by royal order, and it is now rebuilt.
Dolmen of Serra de l'Arca
Nature
A megalithic tomb formed by four large vertical slabs and one horizontal one, built between the twenty-fifth and twentieth centuries BC, in the foothills of the Montseny. It is part of a group of seven dolmens of the serra de l'Arca, a massif located in the north-western sector of the Montseny, between the municipalities of Aiguafreda and el Brull, the whole group being dated to the Chalcolithic. The mountain range gives its name to the group, since the word “arca” formerly denoted megalithic structures. Several of these tombs are included in the Inventory of the Archaeological and Palaeontological Heritage of Catalonia, although some are preserved today in a very deteriorated state, with the slabs fallen and piled up around them.
