Castle of Sant Llorenç Monument · Sant Julià de Vilatorta, Osona, Barcelona Of the castle of Sant Llorenç, in the municipality of Sant Julià de Vilatorta, there remain fortification remains built into a monastery and the base of a square tower at the top of the mountain; the complex is declared a cultural asset of national interest. Documented since the year 884, it was first a castell termenat, and at the start of the eleventh century it was supplanted in its functions by the castle of Meda, becoming then a residence of Augustinian canons: on the same site was founded the Benedictine monastery of Sant Llorenç, begun in the eleventh century and completed in the second quarter of the twelfth, which reused walls and defensive structures of the castle. The complex was rebuilt in the twentieth century on the original remains, which are preserved underground. Photo: pireneta (CC BY-SA 2.0) What to see and do in Sant Julià de Vilatorta
