What to see and do in Les Planes d'Hostoles

Les Planes d'Hostoles
Village
Les Planes d'Hostoles is a municipality in the south of the Garrotxa, on the banks of the Brugent river, the former head of the barony of Hostoles, with 1,746 inhabitants (INE 2025). Located in the valleys of Cogolls and Hostoles, it forms part of the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone natural park, next to the les Medes range, with the Puig Rodó volcano. The castle of Hostoles, part of the county of Besalú and documented since 1021, belonged in the 14th century to the Cartellà family and played a prominent role in the Remensa war of 1462, led by Francesc de Verntallat from the fortress itself; in 1474 King John II granted the area to him with the title of viscount of Hostoles. The municipality also includes Les Encies and Cogolls, and preserves Romanesque churches such as that of Santa María de les Encies, from 1155.
Castle of Hostoles
Monument
The Castell d'Hostoles stands in the Hostoles valley, between the municipalities of Les Planes d'Hostoles and Sant Feliu de Pallerols, in the Garrotxa; today only ruins of the fortification remain, the historic seat of the barony bearing its name. Documented since the early 11th century under the castellan Mir d'Hostoles, vassal of the Count of Barcelona, it passed in 1212 to the Cartellà family through the marriage of Dolça d'Hostoles, and in 1313 to the Rocabertí family. It was occupied by the remences in 1463, during the Catalan civil war, and returned to the crown after the Sentence of Guadalupe of 1488. It preserves three enclosures: the oldest with a semicircular tower and a cistern, another with towers pierced by arrow slits, and a third from the 14th-15th centuries that protected the inner courtyard; recent works have consolidated the ruins.
Castle of Puig-alder
Monument
Castle already documented in 1021, in the will of Count Bernat Tallaferro of Besalú, who left it together with that of Hostoles to his son Guillem; together with the castles of Hostoles and Colltort, it formed the defensive line between the bishoprics of Vic and Girona. In 1212 it passed to Dolça, daughter of Mir d'Hostoles, and later to the House of Palafolls, which lost it in 1259, during the revolt of the Catalan nobility against James I, and it ended up in the hands of the crown. Ruined by earthquakes, only wall remains survive on the mountain of Sant Salvador; the only testimony of its existence is the church of Sant Salvador, a castle chapel documented since 1184, although the 12th-century Romanesque building disappeared and the present one is a recent reconstruction. A Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) since 1988 (BCIN 1247-MH).
Sant Salvador de Puig-alder
Monument
Sant Salvador de Puig-alder is a Romanesque hermitage situated on top of a hill, in the district of Cogolls, within the municipality of Les Planes d'Hostoles (la Garrotxa), a continuation of the chapel of the former castle of Puig-alder, already documented in 1184. With a single nave and a semicircular apse facing south-east, it preserves a broad voussoired porch supported by wooden beams, beneath which a cistern opens, and a single-arched bell-gable; its present appearance is the result of remodelling in the late Middle Ages and the modern era. In 1984 it underwent a careful restoration during which a Romanesque carving of the Virgin was found, called "Mare del Salvador" and now kept in the Museu d'Art de Girona. The castle, of which the hermitage was the chapel, belonged to the counts of Besalú.
