What to see and do in Malla

Malla
Village
Malla is a small municipality in the centre of the Plana de Vic, in the Osona comarca, province of Barcelona, with 285 inhabitants divided between the settlement and about sixty scattered masies. The most notable feature is the Clascar mountain, from which the whole plain can be seen and where remains of an Ibero-Roman acropolis and a 10th-century medieval castle that gives the village its name are preserved. In the eastern sector stands the Romanesque church of Sant Vicenç, next to the town hall; during restoration work an Ibero-Roman sarcophagus with scenes from Greek mythology was found there. The municipality lives mainly from agriculture and livestock raising, although the proximity of Vic has also brought large retail stores. The writer Irene Solà was born in Malla.
Castle of Malla
Monument
The castle of Malla stood on the summit of Mount Malla, or Clascar; today only four scattered stones remain of the old building at surface level, although in 1918 the architect Josep M. Pericas was still able to draw remains of rectangular rooms and an enclosing wall that followed the shape of the hill. The castle's district is documented from the year 924 under the original name of Orsal or Orsalitano, which did not change to Malla until the 11th century. The domain belonged to the family of the viscounty of Girona and passed to the count of Barcelona in 1067; in the early 12th century the king enfeoffed it to the house of Montcada, and in the 14th and 15th centuries it was ceded to the Cabrera family and to Roger de Malla and his descendants, lords of the castle.
Fair of el Bolet de Malla
Activity
Malla holds in autumn a fair devoted to mushrooms, with a display of species, sales of the product and seasonal dishes. Mushroom cooking, with mushrooms gathered in the woods of the Collsacabra and the Guilleries, shapes the table of Osona between September and November.
