What to see and do in Tona

Tona
Village
Tona is a town in the Osona comarca, on the plain of Vic, with 8527 inhabitants, which preserves a dense historical past. On top of the hill overlooking the town there was once an Iberian settlement, around which stand the church of San Andrés, documented from the year 888, and Tona Castle, actually a square tower of unknown purpose. At the foot of the mountain a second settlement later arose beside the Romanesque church of Santa María del Barri, known since 1011. The discovery of medicinal waters in the last third of the nineteenth century turned Tona into a summer resort for the Barcelona bourgeoisie, with four spas of which only the Codina survives today.
Castle of Tona
Monument
Medieval castle that gives its name to the town of Tona, in the comarca of Osona. Its origin does not appear to be earlier than the tenth century, and it was linked to the church of Sant Andreu, consecrated in the year 889. In the twelfth century it passed into the hands of the Montcada family, which received the fief in 1202 from Peter the Catholic, and later came under the jurisdiction of viscount Bernat III de Cabrera. In 1446, during the Remença war, the constable of Portugal attempted to tear down the stronghold, but the councillors of Vic opposed it. Today only the defence tower survives, square in plan and about seven and a half metres high, built of stone and lime using the technique of formwork directly on the rock; its ruins are declared a cultural asset of national interest.
Fair of la Maduixa
Activity
Every spring Tona devotes a fair to the strawberry, with direct sales stalls, tastings and preparations made with this fruit. It is one of the fixed gastronomic events of the fair calendar of the Plana de Vic, alongside those of the mushroom and the truffle.
