What to see and do in Muntanyola

Muntanyola
Village
Muntanyola is a rural municipality in southern Osona, in the province of Barcelona, bordering the Moianès, with the castles of Muntanyola and Múnter and 697 inhabitants. The church of Múnter is documented from the year 929 under the name of the villa of Montari, and that of Sant Quirze de Muntanyola from 938. It lives from dry farming and forestry. At the Vilavendrell farmhouse, owned by the same family between the twelfth and nineteenth centuries and already documented in the 1177 consecration act of the church of Muntanyola, the Formatges de Muntanyola are made today, a Garrotxa-type goat cheese. Its heritage also includes the baroque altarpieces of the church of Sant Quirze and the Romanesque church of Sant Esteve de Múnter, remodeled in the seventeenth century.
Castle of Muntanyola
Monument
The Castell de Muntanyola, also known as Mas el Castell, is in fact a farmhouse with sixteenth-century elements and an eighteenth-century chapel, raised on the ruins of an earlier castle destroyed by an earthquake in 1448. Rectangular in plan and with a two-pitched roof, it has its entrance portal facing southwest, voussoired and topped by a window with Gothic mouldings; on the right open ancient vaults now used as stables, reached through a portal that closes the tilting yard, beneath brick arches that support two-storey galleries. On the north wall stand out windows carved with the silhouette of a castle, a reminder of the original stronghold. Despite some later additions, the complex is well preserved.
Castle of Múnter
Monument
The castle of Múnter is a ruined building close to the church of Sant Esteve de Múnter, in the eastern part of Muntanyola (Osona), declared a cultural asset of local interest. It is already documented in the tenth century, under the name Castellet in 929, as a satellite of the castle of Muntanyola, whose allodial lords were the Muntanyol family; at the end of the twelfth century it separated from it and passed to the Montcada family. In 1293 it belonged to the knight Guillem de Brull, whose family kept the domain until becoming related in the fifteenth century to the Alta-riba of Riudeperes and in the sixteenth to the Descatllar; in 1754 the property passed by marriage to the Sentmenat family. Of the building a stretch of thick wall survives at the top of the hill and, one level below, remains of other walls and a room with part of a barrel vault.
