Birthplace of Jacint Verdaguer Historical milestone · Folgueroles, Osona, Barcelona Jacint Verdaguer was born in Folgueroles on 17 May 1845, the second of eight siblings, of whom only three survived. His father, Josep Verdaguer i Ordeix, was a master builder and farmer; his mother, Josepa Santaló i Planas, a devout woman fond of reading, had a great influence on him, steering him toward the priesthood and toward literature -the poet himself wrote that it was she who, with her milk, made him suckle poetry-. As a child he attended the school opposite the family home, on the present-day plaça Verdaguer, before beginning his studies at the Seminary of Vic in 1855. His birthplace has functioned as a house-museum since 1967 and preserves 19th-century furniture, the parish baptismal font and material about the author of L'Atlàntida (1877) and Canigó (1886). 1845 Photo: Enric (CC BY 4.0) What to see and do in Folgueroles
