What to see and do in Sant Quirze Safaja

Sant Quirze Safaja
Village
Sant Quirze Safaja is a municipality on the Moianès plateau, in the province of Barcelona, on the boundary with Osona and Vallès Oriental, with 663 inhabitants and the castle of Clascar de Bertí within its territory. It lives from farming, livestock and a growing tourism linked to the artisan production of food products. It preserves the church of Sant Pere, of Romanesque origin, and several features of the plateau's karst landscape, such as the Balma de l'Espluga, with its waterfall known as the Cueva del Conde, and the Balma de Torrents. From the mirador de la Campana the landscape of the Moianès can be seen in its entirety. In the mid-19th century the village had barely 215 inhabitants, a figure that has since more than tripled.
El Clascar de Bertí (Bertí Castle)
Monument
A Gothic and historicist castle, today in ruins, located on the upper part of the Cingles de Bertí, in the municipal territory of Sant Quirze Safaja, very close to and south of the church of Sant Pere de Bertí, to whose parish the old rural village of Bertí belonged. It is reached by an old rural track, now turned into a footpath, which leads from the church to the building over about 650 metres; by vehicle, the access track follows a route somewhat further east. It was listed as bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection) in 1949, a listing prompted by its origin linked to a medieval castle.
Mill of Llobateres
Monument
The Molí de Llobateres, also called the mill of Centelles, de la Torre or de Fontubal, is a fortified mill in the municipal territory of Sant Quirze Safaja, declared bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection) in 1949. It stands on the right bank of the river Tenes and was originally powered by a nearby spring, the font Tubal, before a dam was built on the Tenes to increase its capacity. Documented since the 14th century, when it was leased and worked by a certain Arnau Flequer, it was abandoned in the 15th century due to depopulation and resettled from 1486 onward. It retains almost its entire original structure: a tower about ten metres high with walls 130 centimetres thick, which combines the basement housing the wheel, the millstone floor covered by a barrel vault, and the former millers' dwelling.
