What to see and do in Gallifa

Gallifa
Village
Gallifa is a rural municipality in the north of Vallès Occidental, in the province of Barcelona, the least populated in the comarca. It lies in a natural valley of the river Besòs basin, between the mountain of Sant Sadurní to the north and the castle hill to the south. The village has been recorded for more than a thousand years, as attested by the Romanesque churches of Sant Pere i Sant Feliu and Santa Maria del Castell, together with the remains of its Romanesque castle on the Farell mountain. It has 171 inhabitants.
Castle of Gallifa
Monument
The castle of Gallifa, in Vallès Occidental (Barcelona), gives its name to the municipality and has medieval origins: it is documented in the year 999 as a fortified possession of the comital house of Barcelona, although recent excavations have found 8th-century BC Iberian walls on the same site. Between the 11th and 18th centuries it passed through the Gallifa, Rocafort, Centelles, Girbau and Taiadella families, and around the 16th century it ceased to be a military stronghold and became a parish center. Remains survive of defensive walls, a rectangular tower with two vaulted floors, and the Romanesque chapel of Santa Maria del Castell. In 1985 the chapel was restored as the sanctuary of the Mare de Déu de l'Ecologia, and the complex has been Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) since 1988.
Roques del Vallès (Gallifa Area)
Nature
Rock formations in the municipality of Gallifa, at the foot of the Sant Llorenç del Munt mountain range, known locally as the cingles de Sant Sadurní de Gallifa. It is a set of cliffs surrounding a hill just over 900 metres high; the erosion of the sandstones and conglomerates that form it has left a landscape of cliffs with rounded boulders, characteristic of the area.
El Racó ceramics workshop
Historical milestone
Josep Llorens i Artigas installed in 1951 his ceramics workshop at the site of El Racó, with three wood-fired kilns. Between 1953 and 1956 he worked there with Joan Miró on works such as the Labyrinth of the Maeght Foundation, and he remained active in the town until his death in 1980.
