What to see and do in Granera

Granera
Village
Granera is one of the smallest municipalities in Catalonia, in the south of the Moianès comarca, province of Barcelona, set on a plateau of the sierra de Granera that reaches 954 metres. It has 84 inhabitants. The village is organised into two quarters: that of the Church, around the parish church of Saint Martin, and that of the Castell, around the castle of Granera, documented since the year 971 and former centre of the barony of the same name. It also preserves the church of Santa Cecilia, from 1065, with remains of archaic Romanesque paintings. Its economy was based on cereals and a small dye factory closed in the 1970s; today it is above all a place of residence and summer holidays.
Castle of Granera
Monument
The castle of Granera, in the Moianès (Barcelona), is a building of medieval origin that gives its name to the municipality, already documented in the year 971 as «Castrum de Granaria», within the county of Manresa. Over the centuries it changed hands several times: it belonged to the viscountal house of Barcelona, to the Castellvell, the Bell-lloc and the Gravalosa, and in 1375 it was acquired by Pere de Planella; in 1642-1643 it passed to Jacint de Sala i Cervera and became the seat of the barony of Granera, in the hands of his descendants until the 1960s. The perimeter of its walls survives standing on a rocky outcrop, with opus spicatum masonry; it was declared a cultural asset of national interest in 1949 and received consolidation works in the 1970s.
Tower with Machicolation of Granera
Monument
Vernacular tower with a machicolation attached to a farmhouse in the Raval de Baix, a small group of scattered houses in the municipality of Granera (Moianès), declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest. The farmhouse, made up of several aligned wings and a gabled roof, preserves a gallery with two large voussoired round arches; to one side stands the tower, square in plan, built over an old wine press during the 1980s, according to what the person who built it told researchers.
Granera Main Festival
Activity
According to the Geografia General de Catalunya (1910), the main festival of Granera, in the Moianès (Barcelona), was celebrated on the Sunday following Sant Mateu, that is, after 21 September.
