The Green Tower Monument · Caldes d'Estrac, Maresme, Barcelona A cylindrical 16th-century defence tower located in the vila vella (old town) of Caldes d'Estrac, in the Maresme region, declared a cultural asset of national interest. Built of stone and lime mortar, it has a window facing the stream (riera) and is topped with stepped merlons; its name comes from the ivy that covers it. Together with the Torre Busquets it marked the boundary of the old town core, and together with the Torre dels Encantats in Arenys de Mar it formed part of the coastal defence against piracy. It is the oldest tower in the municipality: the first record dates from 1549, when the batlle (bailiff) of l'Estrac asked the Consellers of Barcelona for permission to set up a tavern and a bakery to fund its repair.
