What to see and do in l'Hospitalet de Llobregat

L'Hospitalet de Llobregat
Village
L'Hospitalet de Llobregat is the second most populous city in Catalonia, after Barcelona, whose metropolitan area it forms part of, in the Barcelonès county, only 6 kilometres from its centre. With more than 289,000 inhabitants and a density of 20,754 inhabitants/km², it is one of the most densely populated municipalities in Spain and Europe. Its old centre developed in the 13th century around a pilgrims' hospital, a hostel for travellers heading to Barcelona, in the former parish of Santa Eulalia de Provençana, whose patron saint attests to this origin on the city's coat of arms. It originally covered 21.5 km², but in 1920 it lost 900 hectares of La Marina, annexed by Barcelona, leaving it without direct access to the coast.
House of Harmony
Monument
La Harmonia is a Renaissance manor house in l'Hospitalet de Llobregat, declared a cultural asset of national interest. It was built in 1595, possibly on the site of the Torre Blanca estate, mentioned since the 11th century, next to which a small hospital arose at the end of the 12th century that gave rise to the population centre later known as l'Hospitalet. It is a large manor house with a quadrangular floor plan and a four-sided roof, three hierarchically arranged storeys on the façade, a voussoir-arched round portal and a circular turret that gives it the air of a fortified house. Its current name comes from a society that occupied the building between 1866 and the 1930s; today it is the headquarters of the Ateneu de Cultura Popular.
Casa d'Espanya (Museum of l'Hospitalet)
Monument
16th-century house that is home to the municipal museum of l'Hospitalet, open since 1972.
Can Trinxet and the textile industry of Santa Eulàlia
Historical milestone
The spinning and weaving factory built in 1905 in the Santa Eulàlia neighbourhood was one of the largest on the plain and attracted thousands of workers. Its hall of exposed brick and sawtooth roof survives as testimony of the manufacturing past.
