What to see and do in el Prat de Llobregat

El Prat de Llobregat
Village
El Prat de Llobregat is a municipality in the Llobregat delta, in the metropolitan area of Barcelona, with 66,338 inhabitants (INE 2025). Its territory, flat and on the shore of the Mediterranean, hosts infrastructure of great importance for Barcelona, such as the airport and part of the port area, alongside the Parc Agrari and protected wetlands, including the Remolar pond, on the border with Viladecans. It is also known for its native breed of cocks and hens, the pollos potablava, in whose honour a poultry fair is held every year. The climate is Mediterranean, with an average annual temperature of 16 °C and rainfall below 600 mm.
Agricultural Park of the Baix Llobregat
Nature
The Parc Agrari del Baix Llobregat occupies the alluvial plains of the delta and the lower valley of the Llobregat river, in the centre of the Barcelona metropolitan region, and stretches across fourteen municipalities — including el Prat de Llobregat — with a combined population of around 730,000. Protected since 1998, it covers an area of 2,938 hectares delimited by its special plan and is managed by the Technical Office for Municipal Forest Fire Prevention and Agricultural Development. Its Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and an average temperature of 15.6°C, favours open-air and covered market-garden and fruit-tree crops that make this plain one of the most fertile agricultural areas in Catalonia. The area also preserves remnants of the delta's original landscape, with plant communities of coastal sand dunes, brackish marshes and riverside woodland, today greatly transformed by human activity.
Llobregat Delta
Nature
The Llobregat delta is a 98 km² alluvial plain formed at the mouth of the river, between the Garraf massif and Montjuïc, shared between the Baix Llobregat and Barcelonès counties, very close to the city of Barcelona. It is the second largest delta in Catalonia and is considered of international importance by the European Union, which declared it a Special Area of Conservation in 2014. The present-day delta is the result of a marine transgression that occurred in the Holocene, with sands, gravels and silts that have advanced toward the sea over some 6,000 years. Different habitats coexist within it, from the sandy beach and coastal pine forest to market-garden and fruit crops, wastelands and some wetlands with brackish-water lagoons, concentrated in the areas closest to the coast.
Artichoke of el Prat
Curiosity
The carxofa del Prat is a Catalan artichoke variety native to the Llobregat delta, whose cultivation has been documented without interruption since the 16th century, above all in the municipalities of El Prat and L'Hospitalet de Llobregat. It has been exported to Europe since 1919, although after the Civil War the market became mainly Catalan. The mild climate, with the wind coming down the Llobregat and the sea breezes, together with a slightly saline alluvial soil, make it fresh, intense and not very bitter. It is grown from November to April on 359 hectares of the Parc Agrari del Baix Llobregat, with an annual production of close to six million kilos, 75% of which is sold at Mercabarna, where it accounts for 40% of all the artichoke sold there.
The airfield of the delta
Historical milestone
The plains of the delta hosted from 1916 a flying school and an airfield, taking advantage of the flat and open terrain. From those installations was born the airport that today serves Barcelona and occupies a good part of the municipal district.
Prat breed chicken and capon
Food and drink
Native bird of dark reddish plumage and slate-blue legs, from which comes its name of pota blava. It is the only poultry breed in Spain with a protected geographical indication and the centrepiece of the Christmas table of the delta.
Prat Breed Poultry Fair
Activity
December event that brings together the exhibition of Prat breed birds, the capon competition and the stalls of products of the Parc Agrari. It is the event that has kept alive the breeding of the pota blava and its marketing.
