What to see and do in Begues

Begues
Village
Begues is a municipality in the province of Barcelona, in Catalonia, occupying most of the Garraf massif, with peaks such as Montau (658 m) and Morella (594 m); with more than 50 km², it is the largest municipal territory in the Baix Llobregat. It has 7,561 inhabitants. Its name may come from the Arabic al-buqa, 'plain where the waters remain stagnant'. Excavations at the Can Sadurní cave show that the place was inhabited at least 11,000 years ago by hunter-gatherers, who became shepherds and farmers centuries later; the first village did not appear until about 2,500 years ago, and today the surrounding area preserves a dense underground world of caves and potholes. In the town stand the hermitage of Santa Eulalia, from the 18th century, and the parish church of San Cristóbal, from the mid-20th century.
Garraf Natural Park
Nature
Limestone massif of 12,376 hectares declared a natural park in 1988 and extended in 1992, spread across the municipalities of Avinyonet del Penedès, Begues, Castelldefels, Gavà, Olesa de Bonesvalls, Olivella, Sant Pere de Ribes, Sitges and Vilanova i la Geltrú. The torrential spring and autumn rains dissolve the limestone rock and form the characteristic valleys called fondos. It preserves remains such as the castle of Eramprunyà and old abandoned settlements, among them Campdàsens and Jafre.
