What to see and do in Vallirana

Vallirana
Village
Vallirana is a municipality in the Baix Llobregat district, in the province of Barcelona, located at one end of the Serra de l'Ordal, within the Garraf massif and on the border with the Alt Penedès. Its name has been documented since the year 949 as Valleriana, probably from the Roman personal name Valerius. The oldest remains found within its territory, in the cova Bonica and the Fou de Montaner, date from between 4100 and 3600 BC. During the Middle Ages it belonged to the barony of Cervelló, from which it took the arms of its coat of arms with the colours reversed; it is crossed by the Cervelló stream, which rises in the Garraf massif. From 1787, with the construction of the road of Catalonia (now the N-340), the village began to grow alongside this route. It preserves the deep sinkhole known as the sima dels Esquirols.

Cova Bonita (Pretty Cave)
Nature
The Cova Bonica is a cave of karstic origin located in the Garraf-Ordal massif, near the les Bassioles development, in an area with numerous quarries in the municipality of Vallirana; it is of medium size, with one main chamber and two side chambers. In it were found 314 bone remains from seven individuals — one adult and the rest children or adolescents — from the Cardial Early Neolithic, around 7,400 years old, together with sheep and goat remains, Cardial pottery, tools of flint, quartz, jasper and rock crystal, and ornaments of red coral and sea shells. It was first excavated in 1936, and since 2008 work has continued there under the Grup de Recerca del Quaternari of the University of Barcelona.
Fou of Montaner
Curiosity
Karstic cave in the municipality of Vallirana, within the rich system of caves and potholes of the Garraf massif. Together with the Penya, it contains Neolithic remains dated between 4100 and 3600 BC, which place here a human occupation from the region's recent prehistory.
