What to see and do in Gavà

Gavà
Village
Gavà is a beach town in the Baix Llobregat, between the Garraf massif and the Llobregat delta, with 48,243 inhabitants (INE 2025) and a beach that receives more than two million bathers every summer. At Can Tintorer are the Neolithic mines of Gavà, the oldest gallery mining complex in Europe, worked for over a millennium starting some 6,000 years ago to extract variscite, a green mineral used in jewellery. The territory was also settled by the Iberians, established at the Turó del Calamot, and by the Romans; off the coast, the remains of sunken ships have been found at Les Sorres de Gavà, an old anchorage whose finds -amphorae, marbles and an Etruscan-type helmet- are exhibited in the Museum of Gavà. It also preserves the termenat castle of Eramprunyà.
Mas Rosés
Monument
A farmhouse with a 16th-century defensive tower, documented as an Ibero-Roman settlement from the 2nd-1st centuries BC in excavations carried out in 1986; in 1460 it passed to the Riera family, and in 1901 it was bought by Josep Rosés i Padrosa, from whom it took its current name.
Castle of Eramprunyà
Monument
The castle of Eramprunyà stands atop a mountain between cliffs, overlooking the Llobregat delta and the Garraf, in the municipality of Gavà. First recorded in 957, it was the seat of an extensive medieval district that came to control Gavà, Begues, Castelldefels, Sant Climent de Llobregat, Viladecans and part of Sant Boi, and belonged to the counts of Barcelona before passing in the 14th century to the March family, knights and poets. It was heavily damaged during the Remença peasant wars of the 15th century. The complex consists of three fortified enclosures: the upper one, with the ruins of the Gothic castle-palace; the middle one, with the Romanesque hermitage of Sant Miquel d'Eramprunyà, from the 12th and 16th centuries; and the outer one, where a good part of the old wall is preserved.
Can Dardena
Monument
Can Dardena, in the district of Gavà, is a fortified casal from the 18th century with an earlier defensive tower, a courtyard and much-altered old features, already cited in the Cartulary of Sant Cugat del Vallès as “un manso de ipsa Sentiz”; in the 10th century la Sentiu was acquired by the monastery of Castelldefels, which granted a house that could be this one, and in 1332 the barony's register mentions the existence of a fortified house used as a residence for the castellans of Eramprunyà. It is a farmhouse with a ground floor and upper storey with an Arab-tile roof, an attached defensive tower with small openings and a white-tile sundial above the door. In its cellar, still in use, wine presses brought from Vilafranca were installed in the 19th century.
Prehistoric Mines of Can Tintorer
Curiosity
The prehistoric mines of Can Tintorer, in the municipality of Gavà (Baix Llobregat, Barcelona), form a Neolithic mining site where variscite was extracted, along with flint, opal, quartz and ochre for tools and pigments. Radiocarbon dating places its exploitation around 3400-2360 BC, from the Post-Cardial Early Neolithic to the Middle Neolithic, when activity ceased around 4,500 years ago. It forms a complex network of underground galleries dug into the schist, on several levels connected to one another and accessible from the surface via shafts or sloping galleries. It is, in the European context, the only site with clear evidence of large-scale variscite (callaïs) exploitation, and it can be visited at the Gavà Mines Archaeological Park.
The Neolithic variscite mines of Gavà
Historical milestone
Around the year 4000 BCE galleries were opened at Can Tintorer, in Gavà, to extract variscite, a green mineral used in necklaces that spread throughout the western Mediterranean. They are the oldest known mines in Europe.
White asparagus of Gavà
Food and drink
White asparagus of rounded section that grows in the sandy soils of the delta, tender and with little fibre. It owes a good part of its fame to the fair that Gavà has devoted to it since 1932, in spring, with tastings and direct sale.
