What to see and do in Castellgalí

Castellgalí
Village
Castellgalí is a municipality in the Llobregat valley, in the Bages comarca, province of Barcelona, situated at the confluence of the rivers Llobregat and Cardener, with the now-vanished termenat castle of Castellgalí, documented since 867. It has 2413 inhabitants. Within its territory are the remains of the Torre del Breny, a square-plan Roman tomb from the 3rd century that is the comarca's principal Roman-era relic, and the more rustic Boades tomb, also from the 3rd century, beside which an Iberian necropolis was discovered. The old centre is arranged around the church of Saint Michael, from the 17th century and enlarged in 1897, while of the chapel of Saint Mary, documented in 1292, only ruins of the apse and some walls remain.
Castle of Castellgalí
Monument
The Castell de Castellgalí is a ruined termenat castle, situated above the Llobregat valley, in the comarca of the Bages. It is already documented in 867 as Castelo de Galindo. Throughout the Middle Ages it belonged to various noble families: the Castellgalí from 1178, Bernat de Torres from 1350, the Rajadell from 1413 and the Amigant from 1673, until it reached the Despujol, marquises of Palmerola, its last feudal lords. During a conflict with King John II it was temporarily ceded to the monastery of Montserrat. It is believed to have been destroyed between 1462 and 1472. Remains of a small Romanesque chapel dedicated to Santa Maria are also preserved. The castle has been declared a cultural heritage asset of national interest since 1988.
