What to see and do in Castellbell i el Vilar

Castellbell i el Vilar
Village
Castellbell i el Vilar is a municipality in the Bages, in the province of Barcelona, situated in the Llobregat valley at the foot of Montserrat, about 4 km from the mountain. It has 4159 inhabitants (INE 2025) spread across several settlements: the former factory colonies of La Bauma, El Borrás and El Burés, which form the urban centre, and others of rural origin such as El Vilar or Sant Cristòfol. It preserves Castellbell Castle and acts as a natural corridor of Aleppo pine woodland between the parks of Montserrat and Sant Llorenç del Munt i l'Obac; the municipality also has a protected wetland in a meander of the Llobregat.
Castle of Castellbell
Monument
The castle of Castellbell stands on a hill near the hamlet of Burés, surrounded by a meander of the river Llobregat, and takes its name from its former owner, latinised as Bellit or Bellido. Documented since 924 as “Castelobello”, in 1023 Countess Ermessenda de Carcassona pledged it to her son Berenguer Ramon I; it later passed by marriage to several families until it reached, in the 16th century, the Amat family, who in 1702 received the title of marquis of Castellbell. In 1719 the second marquis, Josep d'Amat i de Junyent, had it destroyed to prevent it being occupied by the miquelets. Today only the west side of the central courtyard survives, along with the ruined chapel of Sant Miquel — now used as a farmhouse —, a cistern, twin Gothic windows and a round-arched voussoir doorway on the south façade.
