Castle of Castellbell Monument · Castellbell i el Vilar, Bages, Barcelona The castle of Castellbell stands on a hill near the hamlet of Burés, surrounded by a meander of the river Llobregat, and takes its name from its former owner, latinised as Bellit or Bellido. Documented since 924 as “Castelobello”, in 1023 Countess Ermessenda de Carcassona pledged it to her son Berenguer Ramon I; it later passed by marriage to several families until it reached, in the 16th century, the Amat family, who in 1702 received the title of marquis of Castellbell. In 1719 the second marquis, Josep d'Amat i de Junyent, had it destroyed to prevent it being occupied by the miquelets. Today only the west side of the central courtyard survives, along with the ruined chapel of Sant Miquel — now used as a farmhouse —, a cistern, twin Gothic windows and a round-arched voussoir doorway on the south façade.
