What to see and do in Santa Maria de Miralles

Santa Maria de Miralles
Village
Santa Maria de Miralles is the southernmost municipality of l'Anoia, in the province of Barcelona, bordering La Llacuna, Orpí and Bellprat and, already in Tarragona, Pontils and Querol. The old village, now abandoned, stands next to the ruins of the castle of Miralles, documented since the year 960, with a walled enclosure built in opus spicatum and remains of the first line of defence; at its foot stands the Romanesque church of Santa Maria, with a nave covered by a pointed vault from the late Romanesque period, around the 13th century. There are also old bauxite mines and archaeological sites in nearby caves. It lives off rain-fed agriculture, and the company Petromiralles, one of the main fuel distributors in Catalonia, has its headquarters there. It has 144 inhabitants (INE 2025).

Curiosity
The Poble Vell de Santa Maria de Miralles occupies the lower part of the Castell de Miralles, documented since the year 960, in the Anoia comarca. Remains of the old settlement survive there, with its first defensive line, built using the opus spicatum technique, now in ruins amid the vegetation. Beside the complex stands the Romanesque church of Santa Maria del Castell de Miralles, a single-nave building with a slightly pointed vault and a round-arched portal on the south wall, a late-Romanesque work of the 13th century.
