What to see and do in Mediona

Mediona
Village
Mediona is a scattered mountain municipality in the province of Barcelona, in the comarca of Alt Penedès, with its head at Sant Joan de Mediona. It has 2,658 inhabitants (2025) and 47.6 km², at 430 metres above sea level, made up of nine settlements such as Can Paixano, Sant Elies and Sant Pere Sacarrera. Its castle, already recorded in 1011, was held by the Mediona family until the mid-13th century, when it passed to the Barberà family; it preserves a square 15th-century tower and the castle church, with a single nave and a polygonal apse, begun in the 12th century and desecrated in 1936. Also Romanesque are the parish church of Sant Joan de Mediona, from 1299, and the church of Sant Pere Sacarrera, from 1030.
Castle of Mediona
Monument
The castle, built in 977 and Romanesque in style, sits above the gorge that the Bitlles river opens between the Penedès and the Noya comarca, a strategic passage between the two territories. Closely linked to the Mediona lineage —of which the deacon Guifred was a member, killed in 1032 fighting the Saracens—, it is first mentioned in 1011, in a donation to Sant Cugat del Vallès. In the 12th century the lordship passed to the Cabrera family, and in 1242 to the Cardona family, who held it until the 19th century. The oldest surviving structure is a semicircular tower with 10th-century opus spicatum-type stonework; its Gothic chapel of Santa Maria was burned in 1936 and rebuilt in 1940.
Wayside Cross of Puigmoltó
Monument
A Baroque wayside cross from the mid-18th century, next to the Puigmoltó farmhouse in Mediona, which marked the boundary of an allodial estate of the monastery of Santes Creus within the municipal area. It stands on a large quadrangular base of three steps and a small plinth, with a very eroded octagonal shaft ending in a small 'magolla' or knot where traces of heraldry, pine trees and a sun can barely be made out; the remains of the cross suggest that both faces bore sculpted images. Documented in 1931 at the foot of the path from Sant Joan de Mediona to the Casesnoves de Can Pardo, it was torn down for unknown reasons and rebuilt at its current location. It is declared an Asset of National Cultural Interest (BCIN 4099-MH).
Cave of el Bolet
Nature
The Cova del Bolet, or Coves del Bolet, is an archaeological site located in the municipal district of Mediona (Alt Penedès), at 633 metres altitude, included in the Inventory of Archaeological and Palaeontological Heritage of Catalonia. The cavity, opened in karstified limestone terrain, consists of a main vestibule and two additional chambers with difficult access; it served first as a dwelling place and later as a collective burial site. Occupations have been documented from the Epipalaeolithic to the Middle Ages, with cardial pottery from the early Neolithic, Epipalaeolithic lithic industry, Iberian coins with the legend CESSE, an annular fibula, the remains of two human individuals, domestic and wild fauna, and bone tools such as awls and a spatula.
