What to see and do in Orpí

Orpí
Village
Orpí is a small municipality in the comarca of l'Anoia, in the province of Barcelona, in the valley of the Carme and made up of the centres of Can Bou, les Ecodines and Santa Càndia. Mentioned in 978 as Auripino, and with news of the castle from 987, it belonged to the viscounty of Cardona until, in 1677, the Serrals family bought it together with the term for 9,500 Catalan pounds. Of the fortress a 12th-century polygonal tower is preserved; its old chapel, the church of Sant Miquel, mentioned in 1099, retains the Romanesque apse with Lombard arcading. The Gothic church of Santa Càndia, from the 14th century, gives its name to the area where an aplec with Catalan skittles is held every April. It has 175 inhabitants (INE 2025).
Castle of Orpí
Monument
Remains of the castell termenat of Orpí (Anoia, Barcelona), which protected the Carme valley, raised above the cliff of the Morei stream, next to the church of Sant Miquel d'Orpí, the fortress's former chapel. Documented for the first time in 987 as castro Auripini in a donation by Count Borrell II, it belonged to the Claramunt and Montagut families in the 11th century, to the viscounts of Cardona between the 13th and 14th centuries, to Arnau Tort de Claramunt from 1280, and, from 1688 to 1837, to the Padró family. Built in a style between Romanesque and Gothic, it preserves a six-sided polygonal tower with a voussoir entrance, and has ended up converted into a farmhouse. It is declared Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection).
Sant Miquel d'Orpí
Monument
A church that reuses part of the Romanesque chapel of Orpí Castle, documented since 1099; it combines Romanesque elements with a Baroque renovation whose entrance voussoir bears the date 1653, and it was restored again in 1875. It incorporates the rectory and the old chapel of Sant Miquel, with a rectangular plan and the entrance on one of the long sides; the small Romanesque apse preserves the Lombard arcading and the barrel-vaulted roof with transverse arches. It has an octagonal bell tower topped with a railing, and inside there are 19th-century paintings that imitate the Romanesque style.
Santa Càndia Water Area
Nature
River site with clear waters in the municipality of Orpí, formed by the Carme stream as it passes through Santa Càndia, on the left bank of the course. Upstream lie els Estrets de Can Virella, a very attractive landscape. Beside the hermitage of Santa Càndia, the aplec of les Bresques is held every last Sunday of April, popular both for swimming and for excursions in the area.
