What to see and do in Pujalt

Pujalt
Village
Pujalt is a small municipality in the north of the comarca of l'Anoia, in Barcelona, with 204 inhabitants, which besides the centre of the same name comprises those of l'Astor, Conill, la Guàrdia Pilosa and Vilamajor. The castle of Pujalt, now in ruins, belonged to the counts of Cerdanya and passed in 1375 to the Cardona family, who kept it until the end of the lordships; la Guàrdia Pilosa, mentioned as early as 1022, was sold in 1379 to Joan de Montbui. The village preserves the church of San Andrés, of late Romanesque origin, and the chapel of la Concepción, from 1399, with a 14th-century polychrome image of the Virgin and Child. In Vilamajor stands the Romanesque chapel of Sant Joan, from the 12th century. In 1938 a camp of the Republican People's Army was set up in the term, today a museum.
Castle of Pujalt
Monument
The castle of Pujalt crowns a hill of 773 metres, on whose slopes the village is laid out in terraces; the name castle of la Mota refers to the hill itself, not to the building. Only remains of walls and a cistern survive, with ashlar blocks reused in houses of the village; on the slope, the walls of the Romanesque chapel of Sant Ponç are also preserved, without a vault. Documented as a castell termenat since 1020, it was part of the frontier march of the county of Berga and belonged to the viscounts of Cerdanya until, with the merger of that county into that of Barcelona, it was enfeoffed to the Cervera family and, from 1375, to the Cardona family. In the 12th and 13th centuries, knights with the surname Pujalt appear linked to the castle as minor castellans, among them Ramon de Pujalt, counsellor of Count Ramon Berenguer IV.
Sant Joan de Vilamajor
Monument
Sant Joan de Vilamajor is the parish church of the hamlet of Vilamajor, in the municipality of Pujalt (Anoia), included in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia. Located at the entrance to this small village, centring a newly built square, it is a single-nave temple with a semicircular apse decorated with a frieze of Lombard arcading and a window with double splay, typical of the 12th-century Romanesque style documented since 1157. On the west side it preserves a voussoired door with a drip-moulding and, on the central voussoir, the relief of a warrior saint with a lance, possibly Saint George or Saint Michael; the ensemble is crowned by a two-bay bell-gable. A significant part of the vault collapsed and was rebuilt in a restoration in the year 2000.
Sant Ponç de Pujalt
Monument
Small Romanesque hermitage dedicated to Sant Ponç, in the urban centre of Pujalt (Anoia, Barcelona), on the street that climbs to the castle. Built in the 11th century, it has a single nave with an apse and no vault; it preserves on the west wall a doorway with voussoirs, archivolt and imposts, of Romanesque workmanship. Recent excavations have uncovered structures that until then had remained covered with earth up to the springing of the vault. It is included in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia.
The training camp of the Popular Army
Historical milestone
Between 1937 and 1938 the plateau of Pujalt hosted a training base of the Popular Army of the Republic, with barracks, shelters and powder magazines cut into the rock. An interpretation centre today explains the complex and the passage of thousands of recruits.
Small chickpea of the Alta Anoia
Food and drink
Small, thin-skinned chickpea grown on dry farmland on the plateau of the Alta Anoia, where cereal and pulses have always been the dominant crop. It is cooked in stews with pork ribs and in winter pottages.
