What to see and do in Castellfollit de Riubregós

Castellfollit de Riubregós
Village
Castellfollit de Riubregós is a municipality in the north of l'Anoia, on the border with la Segarra, situated in the vall del Llobregós, in the province of Barcelona. It is a village of medieval origin, born on frontier land under the shelter of a castle that still stands, in ruins, above the hamlet; the fortress existed around the year 1000, when it belonged to the counts of Cerdanya, and was built where the Camí Reial, between Igualada and Ponts, met the Camí de la Sal, between Cardona and Cervera. It also preserves the monastery of Santa Maria del Priorat. Its economy is based on agriculture, livestock farming and services. In the mid-19th century it had 340 inhabitants, compared with 153 today (INE 2025).
Castle of Castellfollit
Monument
Castellfollit Castle, also called the castle of San Esteban, stands five minutes' walk from the village, at 500 metres above sea level, overlooking the Llobregós valley. Its wall, more than a thousand years old and built under Muslim rule, is the oldest surviving element; documented since 1039, in 1148 it was given to Count Ramon Berenguer IV and became linked to Cardona from 1314. It preserves a fortified perimeter of 106 metres, reinforced with two circular towers and a third, square-based one twelve metres high; it came to have at least four towers. Nearby also stands the Ballester tower, round in plan and about 14.6 metres high. It was badly damaged by the military in 1822 during the Liberal Triennium, who tried to destroy it thoroughly.
Tower of el Ballester
Monument
A Romanesque defensive tower situated on a hill north-west of Castellfollit de Riubregós, which together with the Torre del Raval formed the castle's first line of defence; it was badly damaged in 1882 when the stronghold was dismantled. Of cylindrical plan, at 521 m altitude. An Asset of National Cultural Interest (BCIN 655-MH).
Monastery of Santa Maria del Priorat
Monument
The church of Santa Maria del Priorat, in Castellfollit de Riubregós (Anoia), stands in the valley of the river Llobregós, next to the Ponts road and the municipal cemetery. Already mentioned in 1078, it was rebuilt shortly afterwards and consecrated again in 1082 by Bernat Guillem, bishop of Urgell; around 1093 it was attached to the monastery of Sant Benet de Bages, and maintained worship until 1916, after the 1835 disentailment. It is a Romanesque church with a Latin-cross plan, its nave covered by a pointed barrel vault and a square presbytery with arcading and Lombard bands; above the crossing rises a circular dome, and Gothic chapels were later added on both sides. It was restored in the 1930s and again between 1982 and 1986. It has been Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection) since 1981.
