What to see and do in Calonge de Segarra

Calonge de Segarra
Village
Calonge de Segarra is a small municipality in the north-west of l'Anoia, straddling this comarca and la Segarra, with its administrative seat in Dusfort and 179 inhabitants (INE 2025) over 37.13 km². Its name, of Latin origin (colonicus), refers to a population already documented in the 2nd century BC, inhabited by settlers; it lies in a traditionally transhumant area, crossed by old drove roads along which the flocks of the province of Tarragona passed on their way to the Pyrenees. The municipality incorporated Aleny and Dusfort in 1717, and Sant Pere de l'Arç and Mirambell in 1857; until 1916 it was called simply Calonge, the year it adopted its current name. It preserves the ruins of its castle, as well as those of Mirambell and Castelltort, and the Romanesque church of Santa Fe de Calonge.
Castle of Calonge de Segarra
Monument
Ruins of the termenat castle of Calonge de Segarra, in the north of l'Anoia, documented since 1010, the year in which Bishop Arnulf of Vic died there from wounds suffered during an expedition into Muslim Córdoba. Linked for centuries to the viscounts of Cardona, it became part of the county of Cardona in 1375. Of the fortress there survive a circular 11th-century tower, a room measuring 8 by 4 metres covered by a barrel vault, remains of a cistern, and defensive walls with arrow loops. It is protected as a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection), with code BCIN 591-MH.
Castle of Mirambell
Monument
Documented since 1023 as "in kastro Mirambello", held by the Cardona family from 1037 until the 14th century; today much in ruins, with only three of its five or six façades partly standing -measuring 5.5, 8.9 and 11.5 m- and a circular tower that retains about 2.2 m of height. An Asset of National Cultural Interest (BCIN 592-MH).
Castelltort
Monument
Castelltort is a fortified house, still inhabited, in the municipality of Calonge de Segarra (Anoia), declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). It is documented since 1146, although it may already appear in 989, and from the 12th century it is mentioned as a “castrum” held in fief from the viscount of Barcelona Reverter. Among its lineage of lords was the Barcelona merchant Berenguer de Castelltort, who in 1389 founded the hospital of Cervera, called Hospital de Castelltort; the estate was ceded to the chapter of Sant Jaume de Calaf, with a chapel dedicated to the Conception documented in 1685. The current building, of irregular quadrangular plan with a prow-shaped wall, preserves elements from the 13th and 14th centuries, including a double mullioned window topped by a trefoil arch.
Santa Fe de Calonge
Monument
Santa Fe de Calonge stands surrounded by trees, at the foot of the hill where the ruins of a castle rise, in Calonge de Segarra. It is a 12th-century Romanesque church, with later Baroque reforms to the roof and chancel, dedicated to Saint Faith, virgin and martyr of Aquitaine from the 3rd century. It has a single nave with a transept and a dome over the crossing; the presbytery, square in plan, has two apsidioles, one in each arm of the transept. Notable features include the western portal, with an archivolt, and the hexagonal bell tower, a later addition, raised above the dome. Attached to it is the large rectory house, which preserves arches and an enclosure on its south side. It is a Bien Cultural de Interés Local (local-level heritage protection).
