Castle of Pujalt Monument · Pujalt, Anoia, Barcelona The castle of Pujalt crowns a hill of 773 metres, on whose slopes the village is laid out in terraces; the name castle of la Mota refers to the hill itself, not to the building. Only remains of walls and a cistern survive, with ashlar blocks reused in houses of the village; on the slope, the walls of the Romanesque chapel of Sant Ponç are also preserved, without a vault. Documented as a castell termenat since 1020, it was part of the frontier march of the county of Berga and belonged to the viscounts of Cerdanya until, with the merger of that county into that of Barcelona, it was enfeoffed to the Cervera family and, from 1375, to the Cardona family. In the 12th and 13th centuries, knights with the surname Pujalt appear linked to the castle as minor castellans, among them Ramon de Pujalt, counsellor of Count Ramon Berenguer IV.
