What to see and do in Torà

Torà
Village
Torà is a town in the Solsonès, on the banks of the Llobregós and the Llanera stream, whose municipal term also includes the settlements of Cellers, Claret, Fontanet, Sant Serni de Llanera and Vallferosa, with 1,190 inhabitants. In 1006, during a Muslim raid, it was the scene of a battle in which the Catalan counts Ramon Borrell, Bernat Tallaferro, Guifré II of Cerdanya and Ermengol I of Urgell defeated the army of Abd al-Malik al-Muzaffar, son of the recently deceased warlord Almansor. In 2023 it moved from the comarca of Segarra to that of Solsonès. It preserves medieval remains of the town wall and gates, the old quarter or Call Jueu, the Romanesque sanctuaries of La Aguda, the monastery of Cellers, the castle and church of Llanera, the tower of Vallferosa and a Bread Museum.
Church of Torà
Monument
Parish church of Torà, a town where in 1006 the forces of the Catalan counts, led by Ramon Borrell, defeated an Andalusi army, and which, by a law of the Parlament on 21 March 2023, moved from the region of the Segarra to that of the Solsonès.
Torà Main Festival
Activity
The Festa Major of Torà is celebrated from 29 August to 1 September, the feast day of Sant Gil, patron saint of the town, with the cursa del cos de Sant Gil (Sant Gil's relay run), sardana dancing, the ball de la dansa dels priors and religious events.
Battle of Torà of 1006
Historical milestone
Battle fought in 1006 at Torà (Lleida) between an alliance of Catalan counts and an army of the Caliphate of Córdoba. After an expedition by Ramón Borrell to Lérida in 1003, Abd al-Málik al-Muzáffar, son of the late Almanzor, had devastated the Montseny, Igualada and Manresa with 17,000 men; in 1006 he launched a new incursion against the Segarra and the Ribagorza, destroying churches such as the cathedral of Roda de Isábena. Facing him, Ramón Borrell of Barcelona, Bernardo Tallaferro of Besalú, Wifredo II of Cerdanya and Armengol I of Urgell joined forces and defeated him at Castrum Thoranum with around five thousand Muslim casualties. The victory consolidated the border line of the upper Segre and the Llobregós; the main source for the account is the monk André de Fleury, who included it in his work around 1043.
Torà moves to the Solsonès
Historical milestone
On 21 March 2023 a law of the Parliament transferred Torà from the comarca of the Segarra to that of the Solsonès. The change recognised the economic and service links that the villa had maintained with Solsona for decades.
Flood of the Llanera river
Historical milestone
On 12 October 1907 a flood of the river Llanera inundated the centre of Torà. A plaque placed on the Font de la Vila, a civil work of 1608, still marks the height the water reached that day.
