San Miguel del Valle
Village
San Miguel del Valle is a grain-farming village of 123 inhabitants in the comarca of Tierra de Campos, in the province of Zamora, set on plains ranging between 725 and 850 metres. The earliest traces of settlement date from Roman times, with a late-Roman necropolis, but the founding of the village is placed in the 13th century, when residents who had come from Roales de Campos sought a more prosperous valley and dedicated it to San Miguel. It belonged to the alfoz of Valderas and later to that of Benavente, whose count granted it a founding charter in 1468; in 1738 it became a town independent of the Duchy of Benavente by royal privilege. Its parish church of San Miguel Arcángel, built of rammed earth and brick, holds the venerated Santo Cristo de las Aguas and a neoclassical main altarpiece.
