What to see and do in Valderas

Valderas
Village
Valderas is a town of about 1,480 inhabitants on the banks of the Cea, with no written documentation before the 12th century; in the 13th century it was a fief of the Osorio lordship and head of the so-called Seven Towns of Campos. It backed Henry of Trastámara and John I in the civil wars of the 14th century, who granted it fiscal privileges, and later Charles I in the war of the Comunidades, which made its population and trade grow. It preserves remains of a wall with Mudéjar arches, the House of the Osorio, the old town hall, the 18th-century Seminary -where Napoleon spent a night- and the church of Santa María del Azogue. The ensemble was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 2008, and its July fairs and September patronal festivities, in honour of the Virgen del Socorro, draw tourism in summer.

Monument
A medieval street plan on a hill beside the River Cea, with armorial mansions and houses of adobe and rammed earth. It preserves two arches of the first wall and was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 2008.
The nicknames of Valderas
Curiosity
Living intangible heritage: many families in the town are better known by their nickname than by their surname. There is evidence of nicknames in use since the end of the 19th century, and the new generations go on inheriting them and inventing others.
