Valdescorriel
Village
Valdescorriel is a village of 131 inhabitants in the Zamora comarca of Tierra de Campos, on the banks of the river Cea, whose course has carved deep ravines into the clay, such as that of Barrancogrande. The Vaccaei built a fortified settlement here, El Castro, and its founding is attributed to Fernando I of León in 1043; before 1148 it received a charter from the Monastery of Vega. Its church of el Salvador has a truncated pyramidal Mudejar tower and an ashlar block on the apse with the probable date of consecration, “Era 1131”; it also holds a coffered ceiling, a 15th-century altarpiece and a 17th-century carving of Santa Marta, perhaps from a hermitage now vanished. Beside the river its 18th-century mill has been rebuilt, after being swept away by a flood in the mid-20th century. The village celebrates Santa Marta on 29 July.
