What to see and do in Fuentes de Ropel

Fuentes de Ropel
Village
Fuentes de Ropel is a municipality in the comarca of Benavente y Los Valles, in the province of Zamora, with 369 inhabitants. The earliest settlements on its territory go back more than 2,000 years, with a Roman site at Morales that some identify with the Roman way-station of Brigecio, of which a collection is preserved in the Museum of Zamora, along with a Roman bridge. The place is already recorded in 1017 as Barrio de Fontes; towards the 14th or 15th centuries it took on its present name because of the abundance of water in the subsoil. It belonged to the province of León until 1833. The village has two churches: the parish of Saint Peter, which conceals a 15th-century coffered ceiling and holds the Christ of las Indias, and the ruined Santa María de Arbas, from the 12th century, between late Romanesque and Gothic.
The Cristo de las Indias
Activity
On the third Sunday of September the village brings out the Cristo de las Indias, also called of the Cepeda family, which is kept in the church of San Pedro; on 3 February, at San Blas, the young men run the ribbons on horseback.
