Muelas del Pan
Village
Muelas del Pan is a municipality in the comarca of Tierra de Alba, in the province of Zamora, located 22 kilometres from the provincial capital on the slope leading to the Esla gorges (arribes); the Ricobayo reservoir completely transformed its landscape. Its name alludes to milling, from the old abundance of mills beside the river, and it was known for its potters and for a black pottery whose craft was lost when the building of the dam demanded labour. On the other side of the Esla lies Ricobayo, linked to Muelas by a ford and, since the 13th century, by a bridge. In the castro where the hermitage of the Cristo de San Esteban now stands, there is evidence of occupation from the Bronze Age to Visigothic times. The municipality also includes Cerezal de Aliste, Ricobayo de Alba and Villaflor, and has 592 inhabitants.
