Castroverde de Campos
Village
Castroverde de Campos is a town of 240 inhabitants in Tierra de Alba, province of Zamora. Recorded as Castrum Viride as early as the year 916, in the delimitation of the diocese of León made by King Ordoño II, it had its own charter in 1129, when the infanta Elvira, daughter of Alfonso VI, held office as tenente of the town. Proximity to territories of the Order of St John led to conflicts, such as the sacking of San Vicente de la Lomba by the militias of Castroverde in 1262. It preserves the 13th-century church of Santa María del Río, remains of the 12th-century castle and wall, and a traditional Tierra de Campos architecture of brick, adobe and rammed earth with numerous dovecotes, today explained in an interpretation centre.
