Barcial de la Loma
Village
Barcial de la Loma, a town of about 100 inhabitants in the Tierra de Campos of the province of Valladolid, is documented as early as 1095 as Barceale de Lomba and in 1197 adopted the fuero that the León king Alfonso IX granted to Castroverde de Campos. It passed from the hands of King Juan I, who granted it to Gutiérrez González de Quijada, to the counts of Peñaflor and Fuensaldaña and to the marquis of Alcañices, and its tower-fortress, documented since 1510, was under the orders of the Santa Junta during the Revolt of the Comuneros. Its Mudéjar church of San Pelayo, from the first half of the 16th century, displays star-strapwork coffered ceilings and an altarpiece of 1525 close to the style of Juan de Valmaseda. Beside the road an arch of the former church of San Miguel still stands, in ruins since 1755.
