What to see and do in Vegalatrave

Vegalatrave
Village
Vegalatrave is a hamlet in the province of Zamora bathed by the river Aliste, which here forms a narrow, meandering course within an area protected for its riverbanks, before flowing into the Esla; its lower reaches are partly flooded by the reservoir. The village sits on a mountainside, with steep streets climbing up to the church of San Lorenzo, at the highest point of the settlement. On its municipal land the pre-Roman hillfort of El Castrión is preserved, and during the 13th and 14th centuries it belonged to the Order of the Temple, within the commandery of Alba, after the grant made by King Alfonso IX of León in 1220. On All Souls' Night the young men keep up the tradition of the «cepo», felling and uprooting a tree with picks, shovels and ropes. It has 79 inhabitants.
