What to see and do in Samir de los Caños

Samir de los Caños
Village
Samir de los Caños is a village in western Zamora, in the comarca of Aliste, near the border with Portugal, with 158 inhabitants and a terrain of small valleys crossed by streams whose flow drops in summer. Of possible Arabic origin, it formed part of the Templar commandery of Alba de Aliste, territory granted by Alfonso IX of León in 1220, and after the Order's dissolution it passed to the County of Alba de Liste, created in 1459 by Henry IV. It preserves a traditional stone hamlet, the hermitage of the Bendito Cristo de la Rivera in the centre of the village, and the church of San Juan Bautista, raised on a plateau on the outskirts. On Christmas Eve it performs the Corderas or Pastoradas.

Monument
It stands on a rise on the outskirts of the village; in the built-up area there remain the hermitage of the Bendito Cristo de la Rivera and the church of San Pedro, once the goal of a pilgrimage festival for the neighbouring hamlets.
The Corderas of Christmas Eve
Activity
Before midnight mass the residents perform the Pastorada: the adoration of the shepherds before the Child, a popular Christmas theatre that in Aliste is known as the Corderas and that Samir keeps alive.
The 1220 donation to the Templars
Historical milestone
Alfonso IX of León handed this territory over to the Order of the Temple in 1220; later, in 1459, Enrique IV included the place in the newly created county of Alba de Liste, on which it depended for centuries.
