What to see and do in Gallegos del Río

Gallegos del Río
Village
Gallegos del Río is a municipality of 455 inhabitants in the Zamora comarca of Aliste, near the border with Portugal, watered by the Aliste river and made up of seven villages: Gallegos del Río, the capital, together with Domez, Flores, Lober, Puercas, Tolilla and Valer. It owes its name to having been resettled in the Middle Ages by people from Galicia. It preserves traditional stone houses adorned with carvings, and its parish church is notable for a silver cross and a Cristo de las Injurias. In 1171 King Ferdinand II of León donated the town of Domez, today within its territory, to the monastery of Moreruela, at a time when the comarcas of Alba and Aliste were a zone of conflict between the kingdoms of León and Portugal.

Monument
The parish church of San Pedro Apóstol keeps a silver processional cross and a carving of the Cristo de las Injurias; among the houses, stone dwellings with carvings worked into the ashlars abound.

Nature
The Aliste River rises in the Sierra de la Culebra, in the hamlet of San Pedro de las Herrerías, descends from close to 1,110 metres and runs for about 72 kilometres before flowing into the Esla, near the Ricobayo dam; its basin covers 657 km² and receives the waters of the Mena and Frío rivers. It waters the municipality of Gallegos del Río and forms its greatest asset: a plain of broad meadows and market-garden crops hemmed in between slate hills, overlooked by seven hamlets of little more than four hundred residents —Domez, Flores, Lober, Puercas, Tolilla, Valer and Gallegos del Río itself— whose parish church is notable for its silver cross and its Cristo de las Injurias. Its wildlife, once rich in eels and river crayfish, has been depleted since the reservoir was built.
