Santa Eufemia del Barco
Village
Santa Eufemia del Barco is a municipality in the Tierra de Alba region, in the province of Zamora, beside an arm of the Ricobayo reservoir, with a river beach; it also groups together the settlements of Losilla and San Pedro de las Cuevas over 52.18 km² and has 169 inhabitants (INE 2025). There are Asturian hillforts nearby, beside the river Esla, the natural border of this pre-Roman village. In the 13th and 14th centuries the territory belonged to the Order of the Temple, within the commandery of Alba granted by Alfonso IX of León in 1220, and later formed part of the County of Alba de Liste. Until the 19th century it was dependent on San Vicente del Barco, a town that vanished under the waters of the reservoir. Its church of la Asunción holds images brought from that vanished building, and the village houses are built of adobe, slate and quartzite.
