Andavías
Village
Andavías is a municipality in the province of Zamora, about 14 kilometres north-west of the capital, with 404 inhabitants. Its earliest traces of settlement are an Acheulean handaxe from the Palaeolithic; the present settlement was founded by the Leonese kings in the early Middle Ages, integrated into the diocese of Zamora and the Kingdom of León, and it already appears documented in 1174, in the sale of an estate. The chapter of Zamora cathedral had a permanent presence here as a major landowner, together with the convent of Santiago and the monastery of San Jerónimo, and in 1509 Ferdinand the Catholic ordered the army to be stationed here at the request of the councillors of Zamora. By the mid-eighteenth century the concejo had a forge, a wheat pósito and three ermitas.
