Perilla de Castro
Village
Perilla de Castro is a village of 150 inhabitants in the comarca of Tierra de Alba, province of Zamora, which also includes the La Encomienda housing development. The sites of Valdespino and Valdementiras attest to occupation since the Palaeolithic, and in the Middle Ages it was resettled by the kings of León. The church of San Martín, with a railed portico and a pinnacled bell-gable, holds a Gothic crucifix and the original bust of the Virgen de Roaces, from the 14th century, moved here after the fire at its hermitage. The village preserves traditional architecture of stone, slate and adobe, with dovecotes and rural chimneys. Under the waters of the Ricobayo reservoir, in years of drought, the 1869 puente de la Estrella emerges, which was submerged in 1930 and replaced by another of the same name in 1933.
