Manzanal del Barco
Village
Manzanal del Barco is a municipality in the province of Zamora, beside the river Esla, here turned into the Ricobayo reservoir, with 118 inhabitants. Its name recalls that for centuries the Esla was crossed by boat, until a stone bridge replaced the crossing; that bridge was later flooded by the reservoir, and today it emerges above the water in times of drought. The village has been documented since 1169, in a donation to Zamora cathedral. Its most emblematic building was the hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Piñedo, of which only the bell-gable and a round arch remain; the present parish church of San Torcuato, with a Herrerian bell-gable, was completed in 1605. It is linked to Palacios del Pan by the Martín Gil railway viaduct. It also preserves the hill and castro of San Martín, today a viewpoint.
